Salicylic acid is a type of beta hydroxy acid (BHA) derived from natural sources like White Willow Bark. It is widely used in skincare products due to its various benefits for the skin and although it is an acid it is far gentler than using any physical scrub.
Here is how salicylic acid can help your skin:
Acne Treatment: Salicylic acid is highly effective in treating acne because of its ability to penetrate into the pores and dissolve excess oil and dead skin cells that can clog them. By doing so, it helps to prevent the formation of new acne lesions and promotes clearer skin. It is for this reason that you will find Salicylic Acid in many cleanser for acne prone skin.
Exfoliation: Salicylic acid acts as an exfoliant, meaning it helps to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. This process can improve skin texture, tone and overall appearance, leaving your skin smoother, more radiant. It is a far better option than any physical scrub with small beads which can tear and cause damage to the skins surface.
Anti-inflammatory: Salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce redness and inflammation associated with acne and other skin conditions like rosacea and psoriasis.
Appearance of enlarged pore size: By effectively cleaning out the pores and removing debris, salicylic acid can help to minimise the appearance of enlarged pores, giving the skin a smoother and more refined look. Clearing out the pores will also stop the pores being stretched with dirt and oil.
Blackhead Removal: Salicylic acid is particularly effective in treating blackheads (open comedones) by dissolving the keratin plugs that block the pores and lead to their formation.
When using products containing salicylic acid, it's important to start with a lower concentration and gradually increase if needed, as it can cause dryness or irritation, especially for sensitive skin types. If you are prone to blackheads on your nose or chin I would use a BHA on those areas only.
It is also essential to use sunscreen during the day when using salicylic acid products, as they can increase sensitivity to the sun. The product can also be very drying so if you are using a stand alone product restrict to 2/3 times a week.
