This tween skincare obsession is everywhere! Teens and tweens see skincare all over social media, Tik Tok, Instagram, Snap Chat and want to be like these influencers and buy the products just to show their followers in a 'get ready with me' reel. My kids are no different, although I try and steer them in the right direction when choosing what to buy and use.
When it comes to skincare for tweens, simplicity is key. Tweens are at an age where their skin is still developing and may not require heavy-duty products or treatments. Here is a simplified skincare routine that avoids potentially harmful products like retinol and glycolic acid while still promoting healthy skin:
Gentle Cleanser: Start with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser that effectively removes dirt, oil and impurities without stripping the skin's natural moisture barrier.
Moisturiser: Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser that provides hydration without clogging pores. I try and encourage fragrance free to avoid unnecessary irritation.
Sunscreen: Sun protection is essential, even for tweens. Use a broad-spectrum (UVA+UVB) sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day, regardless of the weather. One that is lightweight, non-greasy and suitable for daily use.
Spot Treatment (Optional): If your tween experiences occasional breakouts, consider using a spot treatment, there are a few good options on the market, use in isolated area only as they can dry out your skin.
Hydration: Encourage your tween to drink plenty of water, at least at home and keep the fizzy and juices for when they are out and about this is helping to stay hydrated from the inside out. Hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy skin.
Healthy Habits: In addition to skincare products, healthy habits such as getting enough sleep, managing stress, eating a balanced diet and practicing good hygiene are all crucial to health of your skin.
It is hard I know but try and avoid them getting caught up in skincare trends promoted on social media platforms as many of these trends may not be suitable for young, developing skin. Instead, focus on gentle, non-irritating products that promote overall skin health without causing unnecessary harm.
