Dry or Dehydrated skin?

Sometimes we think it's dry skin, but it is actually dehydrated.

Dry skin and dehydrated skin are two different skin conditions, although they can often present similar symptoms.

Dry Skin:

  • Dry skin is a skin type that produces less sebum (natural oil) than normal skin. This lack of oil can lead to flakiness, rough texture and sometimes itchiness.

  • It is often genetic, meaning you may be born with it or it can develop over time due to internal and external factors like age, hormonal changes or environment.

  • Your skin tends to feel tight, a bit uncomfortable, especially after cleansing.

Dehydrated Skin:

  • Dehydrated skin lacks water content rather than oil. Even oily skin types can experience dehydration.

  • The skin can be caused by various factors such as weather changes, excessive sun exposure, harsh skincare products, poor diet and hydration habits.

  • Dehydrated skin may feel tight, look dull and show more fine lines and wrinkles, especially under the eyes. It may also be prone to sensitivity and irritation.

How to Help:

Moisturise:

  • Use a thicker moisturiser and a hydrating serum to lock in moisture, you can sandwich this between your cleanser and moisturiser, as well as adding in mists and oils in to your routine.

Hydrate:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to hydrate your body from within. This can help improve the overall health and appearance of your skin, but skin is one of the last elements that will benefit from the water so do not rely on this solely to help.

Gentle Cleansing:

  • Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser that doesn't strip away natural oils. Check whether your cleanser contains ingredients that are stripping your skin like AHA/BHA'S.

  • Tip: Avoid hot water as this can further dry out or irritate the skin.

Protect:

  • Use SPF daily to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, which can worsen dryness and dehydration.

  • In cold weather, protect your skin from harsh winds and low humidity by wearing protective clothing and using a humidifier indoors.

Exfoliate:

  • Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. However, be gentle, as over-exfoliation can exacerbate dryness and sensitivity.

  • Avoid harsh physical scrubs.

Avoid Irritants:

  • Limit exposure to harsh skincare products, like foaming cleanser, fragrances and alcohol based products, as they can irritate and further dehydrate the skin.
